A native of Queens, New York, Dr. Altman moved to Albuquerque, NM as a teenager and grew up wanting to stay in the sunny Southwest. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry at Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA before attending medical school at the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego. He completed his internship in General Surgery at the University of California in San Diego and then completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Altman continued his postgraduate education by completing fellowships in Arthritis Surgery and Total Joint Replacement at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey, CA and Total Joint Replacement and Adult Reconstructive Surgery at Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles. He earned his Board Certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1987 and was recertified in 1996 and 2006.

Dr. Altman has held hospital appointments and hospital positions in Los Angeles, Downey and San Diego, CA as well as St. Louis, MO. Presently, he is affiliated with six hospitals in Albuquerque, NM:

Dr. Altman also functions as the team physician for the Albuquerque SOL FC Soccer Club, helping to support opportunity for youth physical, mental and emotional development. Dr. Altman has previously served as the team physician for the New Mexico Chiles Professional Soccer Team, the Albuquerque Geckos Semi-Professional Team, the Albuquerque Asylum Men and Woman’s Semi-Professional Team and the New Mexico Storm Indoor Soccer Team. Dr. Altman has participated as a team physician for local high school football and wrestling teams. He is a member of Greater Albuquerque Medical Association/Albuquerque Public Schools Sports Medicine Committee, which he chaired for two years. He is currently the Chief of Orthopedics at Lovelace Medical Center and the past Chief of Surgery at Lovelace Medical Center and the past Chief of Orthopedics at Presbyterian Hospital. Albuquerque Magazine voted him one of the “Top Docs” of Albuquerque numerous times since 2007. Dr. Altman is the proud father of three sons and was the soccer coach for local youth clubs for 19 years.
